Is Biblical Morality Outdated?
Chapter Synopsis

A Fatal Error - A young lady sits down at a computer and types “I want to remain angry at my mom because of her rules.”  The computer screen plays out a scenario of her actions which includes a scene of her arguing with her mother, the beginning of a relationship with a new boyfriend, a pregnancy, the loss of the boyfriend, and a child born with a herpes infection of the brain.

“Can you give me twenty Vicodins?” - At 4a.m., a 42 year-old man, who claimed
to be a farmer, complained of a painful limp, but actually he lied to get narcotics.

I Do, and now I Don’t - In my first week of practice, some of the patients I saw included a young lady with irritable bowel syndrome, a man with high blood pressure, a lady with depression, and a mom that wanted her child tested for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.  These patients problems aggravated by infidelity in the family.

Empty - Annette had a miscarriage, and then related to me she had a three-month-old
die unexpectantly of a heart problem, and she aborted her first pregnancy

“Oh my, how I love to eat” - At church, the young people were having a pizza and dessert night.  I was satisfied after ingesting a piece of ham pizza and a piece of strawberry pie, but I splurged on more because I wanted to.

A Wise or Unwise Risk? - Even when Jack Whitaker and his wife won the biggest
undivided lottery in the nation, it didn’t bring him a carefree life.  There are other
reasons not to join America’s $700 billion obsession with gambling

“Let’s get high” – Robert showed the jury four bullet wounds in his back.  Then he told  how two drug dealers shot him and killed two of his friends.  There is a low side to drugs.

Prayer of an unwed mother - The consequences of premarital sex may include sexually
transmitted disease, relational pain, pregnancy, loneliness, incarceration, and poverty

Be careful little eyes - A convicted child molester said his mother gave him pornographic magazines to read when he was young.  It obsessed him until he went to prison.

The Other Side of “Brokeback Mountain” - A 36 year-old lesbian explained
to me how her alcoholic parents divorced, her grandfather molested her, and her
lover left her.  God didn’t design her life to be filled with heartache.

Possession is 99% of the game - At 6 a.m. in a mild drizzle, I walked out the back door to check on my ten speed bike.  It was gone.  Someone took it.  Stealing affects everyone.  It cost the average family of four an extra $440 a year in higher prices.

“You’ve come a long way baby”- Renee at 36 years-old had a heart attack.  Cigarettes
are the main preventable risk factor in heart disease, cancer, stroke and lung disease.

Who hath woe? – An intoxicated young man was killed when his car hit a tree at 100 miles per hour.  He was one of 100,000 that die every year from alcohol.

Hands that shed innocent blood – The young murder victim was stabbed 51 times
after a drug deal went bad.  It was my initiation to the brutality of murder.

Thou Shalt Not Kill (Yourself) - A 28 year-old white male with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest arrived in the emergency room.  He was as white as the bed sheet that covered him.  He survived, but every year 30,000 kill themselves.

A Broken Heart – After a 4 month separation from his wife, a 48 year-old man told me
he was stressed because he just went out for his 25th anniversary dinner with his wife.
She told him she wasn’t ready to get back together and probably never would be.

Decision Wheel – A graphic demonstrating categories of right and wrong according to Biblical standards.

None of these Diseases – S.I. McMillen M.D. wrote “None of these Diseases,”
which is based on God telling the Israelites to obey His commandments,
and they wouldn’t have the Egyptian’s diseases.

Living in Darkness - A 48 year-old white male told me about his 3 marriages, alcoholism, lies, adultery, bankruptcy, suicide attempts, and a lesbian daughter.

The Gray Zone - Music, television, the internet, books, friends, movies,
video games either help you grow closer to God or further away.

Living in the Light - When I was asked to give a devotional at Jackson State Prison, I thought about Jesus.  He was beaten, scourged, misunderstood, hated, tested, tried, punished, rejected, lied about, mocked and crucified.  He understood the inmate’s hurts, mistrust, shame, loneliness, tears, grief, and heartaches.  He could offer them hope, eternity, heaven, joy, peace, forgiveness, happiness, contentment, wisdom, faith, and a purpose for living.

Living in the Light II - I read Proverbs 3: 5-6, and asked God for direction in my life.
He answered my prayer for a career, a wife, and for daily decisions.

Legacy – Of Max Juke’s 1029 descendents, 100 were sent to prison, 190 were prostitutes, and 100 were drunkards.  They cost the state $1.2 million.  Jonathon Edwards had 729 descendents, which consisted of 300 preachers, 65 college professors, 13 college or university presidents, 60 authors, 3 U. S. congressmen, and one vice president of the United States.  As Sarah Groves sings, we either pass on a curse or a blessing.
